रक्षाबंधन कब प्रारम्भ हुआ इसके विषय में कोई निश्चित कथा नहीं है लेकिन जैसा कि भविष्य पुराण में लिखा है, सबसे पहले इन्द्र की पत्नी ने देवराज इन्द्र को देवासुर संग्राम में असुरों पर विजय पाने के लिए मंत्र से सिद्ध करके रक्षा सूत्र बंधा था। इस सूत्र की शक्ति से देवराज युद्ध में विजयी हुए।
शिशुपाल के वध के समय सुदर्शन चक्र से भगवान श्री कृष्ण की उंगली कट गई थी तब द्रौपदी ने अपनी साड़ी का आंचल फाड़कर श्रीकृष्ण की अंगुली पर बांध दिया। इस दिन सावन पूर्णिमा की तिथि थी।
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने द्रौपदी को वचन दिया कि समय आने पर वह आंचल के एक-एक सूत का कर्ज उतारेंगे। द्रौपदी के चीरहरण के समय श्रीकृष्ण ने इसी वचन को निभाया।
आधुनिक समय में राजपूत रानी कर्णावती की कहानी काफी प्रचलित है। राजपूत रानी ने अपने राज्य की रक्षा के लिए मुगल शासक हुमायूं को राखी भेजी। हुमायूं ने राजपूत रानी को बहन मानकर राखी की लाज रखी और उनके राज्य को शत्रु से बचाया
